From afar, Indonesia’s Mahakam delta appears to be a sprawling collection of mangrove-covered islands, but @usgslandsat imagery reveals something else. Using the Water Index rendering, we see many of the islands appear blue, which indicates high levels of moisture or inundation. This is due to mangrove deforestation that began in the 1990s as shrimp aquaculture began to take off. Thankfully, more sustainable practices are increasing, including the adoption of silvoaquaculture, which integrates mangrove habitats and fishing. See more with the Esri Landsat Explorer. Since then, it has hosted two championship football games (including Monday’s college football championship) and will be a host venue for the next men’s World Cup. One special feature about the stadium is the LED-equipped roof, which displays videos and images visible to airplane passengers landing at nearby LAX. Prior to being a stadium, the site was the location of the Hollywood Park horse racing track.
