DARote learning — memorising answers without understanding — is increasingly being flagged by educators and child-development experts as harmful to children’s real learning and long-term growth. While it can help students quickly recall facts for tests, critics say it often trains children to “repeat” instead of “think.”
Teachers report that heavy dependence on rote methods can weaken conceptual clarity, because children may know the correct answer but not the “why” behind it. This gap shows up later when students face new or tricky questions that require reasoning, problem-solving, or application-based thinking.
Experts also warn that rote-focused classrooms can raise stress and fear of mistakes. When marks become the only goal, children may avoid curiosity and creativity, and feel anxious about learning, especially during exam seasons. Over time, this can reduce motivation and confidence, making students less likely to ask questions or explore topics deeply.
