Rihanna dazzled the crowd with a full red outfit at her Super Bowl halftime show, but some were quick to notice the shiny ruby ring on her hand. The 19-carat ring, which reportedly cost $1 million, is from the New York-based jewellery house Bayco and made with Burma ruby—one of the gemstones that has helped fund Myanmar military’s brutal crackdown against the country’s pro-democracy movement. As Western countries impose economic sanctions to squeeze the regime’s resources, the country’s gemstone industry has become one of the junta’s key revenue streams as it continues to stamp out dissent and battle armed resistance groups. Since the coup, Myanmar’s junta has arrested almost 20,000 and killed nearly 3,000 of its supposed political opponents, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners. “We are aware of the situation in Myanmar and that is the reason why we are very careful when it comes to acquiring Burmese gemstones,” Bayco said in an email statement to VICE World News, adding that the Burmese rubies that they purchase “were part of an estate of a prominent family or collector for many years.” “As per the ruby ring that Rihanna wore at the Super Bowl, the stone was purchased from a family collection and the ruby had been in their possession for over 50 years,” they said. In 2021, Rihanna won praise by tweeting her solidarity with the people of Myanmar right after the coup. Now, activists who have been calling for a ban on Myanmar’s gemstone industry are imploring Rihanna to once again show her solidarity by supporting a ban on the country’s gems. @hellokoyu reports.
