Jibing twin pole solo. It’s been fun experimenting on my trailer sailer with a twin pole system more commonly seen on high-performance racing dinghies. The mission was to hone a slick, efficient setup. It worked well for club racing, but over time I’ve found limitations and reliability issues that matter more when cruising solo. So for now, this system is being parked. I really enjoy messing about with rigging and trying to find systems that make life simple, so I’ll be installing a more conventional, simple symmetric system with a few smart tweaks learned from the twin pole setup. I’ll also be building a bowsprit and rigging an asymmetric with the aim of full send when conditions allow. Keep an eye out for snippets and system breakdowns. I’ve put together an in-depth look at the twin pole system in the comments/bio if you want the full breakdown. All good fun. Instead of charging blindly, they take turns slicing along the edge of the baitball, raising their huge dorsal “sails” and flashing electric blue stripes. Those stripes and sails do three clever things: Make the sailfish look bigger, pushing sardines into a tighter ball Help each hunter signal teammates and avoid collisions Confuse the school with sudden color pulses right before a strike Sailfish can burst to around 100 km/h (60+ mph) in short sprints, making them some of the fastest fish in the ocean. But speed alone isn’t enough—this is teamwork and precision. Sardines bunch up into a dense baitball because it lowers each fish’s chance of being the one hit. It’s a numbers game: predator coordination vs prey chaos. Sailfish are currently Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, but they’re impacted by overfishing and bycatch, and they depend on healthy populations of small schooling fish like sardines.
