Most school refusal doesn’t escalate because parents stop trying. It escalates because the child’s nervous system is being pushed past what it can safely manage. From a social work and trauma-informed lens, this matters because: 🔸 When a child is in a state of chronic stress, their brain prioritises survival over learning. That’s not a behaviour problem - it’s a physiological one. Research across child mental health, attachment theory, and nervous-system regulation consistently shows: 🔸 Pressure increases threat perception, even when it’s calm and well-intentioned. 🔸 A dysregulated nervous system can’t access reasoning, flexibility, or motivation. 🔸 Repeated “push through” experiences often reinforce fear, not resilience. 🔸 What looks like avoidance is frequently a child protecting themselves from overwhelm. This is why so many families say: “We tried being consistent. We tried being gentle. We tried being calm … and things still got worse.” Nothing went wrong. You didn’t fail. You were responding to a system that needed safety before expectation. In social work practice, we look at the whole context - the child’s stress load, their sense of safety, their capacity in that moment, not just the end goal of attendance. Because skills return after regulation - not before it. Save this post of it helped you make sense of what’s happening in your home. And please share it if you know another parent quietly living this. 🍓And if school refusal is part of your everyday life - follow for calm, nervous-system-first support from a (university mental health trained) mum who’s lived this - and gets it. - Jules ❤️ #schoolrefusal #schoolanxiety #teenanxiety #kidsmentalhealth

School refusal wasn't defiance....it was anxiety. At school, he was “fine.” But at home, his anxiety was swallowing him whole… and mine right along with it. That morning, he couldn’t go. I couldn’t carry him to the car. The tears began to fall 😭 And for the first time, I admitted what I’d been trying to outrun for months: I can’t do this alone anymore. So I called the school. Asked for help. And his counselor showed up at my door within 30 minutes, her assistant right alongside her. The secret was out. Now we could get help. What they did that day, helped my son and I will never forget it. After months of holding it together behind closed doors—while being met with truancy letters instead of compassion. If you’re in that season where your child’s struggles are invisible to the world but painfully loud in your home… You are not failing. You are responding to something real. Sometimes the bravest thing a mom can do is stop white-knuckling it and say, “I need support.” If this feels familiar, you’re not alone 🤍 Share this with another mom who needs encouragement. #schoolrefusal #adhdsupport #anxietysupport #neurodivergentparenting #neurodivergentmom

School refusal is one of the biggest stressors for families, and one of the most mishandled. Helpful mindset shift: ❌ “They’re being difficult” ✅ “Their nervous system is overwhelmed” The goal isn’t immediate attendance. The goal is regulated attendance. 📌 Save this, and know you’re not alone. #schoolrefusal #neurodiversity #childdevelopment #parenting #inclusion

If your child’s mental health is going downhill because of school - please hear this: You are not overreacting. And it is not “just a phase.” When anxiety turns into stomachaches? Quick note: when I say “shrink anxiety,” I don’t mean completely eliminating fear. I mean: Fewer spirals. Less avoidance. Less dependency on reassurance. More confidence in their body. For the next 21 days, focus on these 5 habits 👇🏼 1. Regulate the body before you explain anything. When your child says, “I don’t want to go,” don’t start with logic. Start with their nervous system. Slow your voice. Sit at their level. Breathe with them. Have them press their feet into the floor or squeeze your hands. A calm body can absorb reassurance. An activated one cannot. 2. Shrink exposure, don’t remove it. Instead of skipping the birthday party, stay for 15 minutes. Instead of sleeping in their bed, sit in the chair. Instead of canceling the playdate, shorten it. The goal isn’t comfort. It’s tolerable discomfort. Confidence grows when they experience fear… and survive it. 3. Stop answering every “what if.” When they ask, “What if I throw up? What if I cry? What if I mess up?” Instead of solving each scenario, try: “What do you think your body could do if that happened?” “How could we help your body feel braver? Reassurance feels loving. But tolerance builds strength. 4. Practice skills when they’re calm. Don’t introduce breathing in the middle of a meltdown. Practice it at bedtime. Role-play school drop-off on Sunday afternoon. Turn coping tools into games. Skills get layered before they’re needed. 5. Follow a structured plan based on how anxiety shows up for your child. Separation anxiety needs something different than body panic. Avoidance needs something different than reassurance loops. Bedtime anxiety needs something different than school refusal. When you’re guessing, you default to reacting. But when you have a plan, you respond intentionally. Anxiety doesn’t shrink because kids mature. It shrinks when the nervous system is trained on purpose. That’s why Anxiety Busters is 21 days. Not overwhelming. Not forever. Just long enough to reset the loop… together. 10 minutes a day. Exercises kids actually enjoy. 👏🏼Structured. Layered. Clear. When you’re ready to stop reacting and start retraining, comment “RESET” and I’ll send you the details 🫶🏼

I listened to the pediatrician who dismissed me, made me think that things weren’t concerning, and even blamed me and my parenting. They commonly hear parents report these things, but common doesn’t mean normal. I let them push me around for far too long and I wasted a lot of time getting my son the help he deserved He would eventually land himself a bunch of diagnosis: ODD, ADD, anxiety, adjustment disorder, and eventually PANS/PANDAS but none of those things told me WHY…. ❓Why did he go from 0 to 100 for little reason ❓Why was he constipated and how to fix it that don’t include a Band-aid approach ❓Why was he having allergy symptoms, chronic congestion, moderate conductive hearing loss, and needed his tonsils and adenoids removed ❓Why was he constantly complaining of leg pain ❓Why was he so difficult to get to sleep and why was it hard for him to stay asleep ❓Why was he having anxiety, fears, worries, and school refusal All they did was label all of those things with diagnoses and that’s when I finally stopped listening to them. I started to listen to that nudging feeling that told me there was more going on And me, trusting and listening to myself, changed everything for both of my boys. It turns out he had chronic inflammation, including brain inflammation, due to chronic stress from hidden mold in our environment. It destroyed his got microbiome, depleted vitamins and minerals, made his genetics express in ways that we had to address, he had parasites, heavy metals, and many infections. All of the diagnoses he had were based on reports and observations. They are all behavioral diagnoses, but his behavior wasn’t the issue. It was his body’s way of screaming for help. If you have that nudging feeling that there’s more to your child’s behavior please listen to it, trust yourself. and don’t wait. Their childhood clock is ticking. Comment “ME” if this resonates, you feel stuck, and you’ve tried everything and are ready for a different way.

I get it. I can’t tell you how much I really do. The OCD. The school refusal. The eating issues. The rage. The self-harm. It’s terrifying. So we research. We pay. We refer. Teachers. Counsellors. Specialists. Some of it helps. Some of it makes things much worse. Not because they’re bad ideas but because every new intervention adds more pressure. Pressure to get there, expectation it will work this time, naming our child as a problem to fix. And deep down, you know… Pressure is the last thing your child needs. At the root of most challenging behaviour is anxiety. A huge internal feeling of “I don’t know how to deal with uncertainty.” And if you’re honest? That’s happening in you too. Two anxious bodies bouncing off each other. And your child needs you to go first, to step up so that they can feel safe. If this is your current reality start with these 3 ideas: 1️⃣ Find your voice ( start small) There is one voice your child really needs to hear and it’s yours. No matter how much you are worried about getting it wrong.. Think about what it might take to start using some of that information you’ve learned. Just 1% changes in saying more, a little louder, braver. From love not fear. 2️⃣ See the anxiety under the behaviour. Your child’s behaviour is always a response to underlying feelings. Same as yours. Learn how to address their feelings not the behaviour you see. And give yourself the same compassion. 3️⃣ Learn emotional flexibility. When you build capacity in your body your child can borrow your stability. This has to be learned in the moment, the exact moment that it’s hardest. You’re not confused about what your child needs, you instinctively know. So tell me who are you waiting for permission from? If you’re ready to stop outsourcing and start leading, come and learn this inside The Leadership Method. Join us live in April.
