Sciatica causes pain that travels from the lower back down through the hips, buttocks, and legs. These pain-relief exercises help reduce nerve pressure, improve flexibility, and strengthen supporting muscles. 🔹 Knee to Chest Stretch Lie on your back and slowly pull one knee toward your chest. Hold for 15–20 seconds and switch legs. This helps reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve. 🔹 Piriformis Stretch Lie on your back, cross one leg over the opposite knee, and gently pull the supporting thigh toward your chest. This stretch relaxes the hip muscles that may irritate the sciatic nerve. 🔹 Cat-Cow Stretch Start on hands and knees. Slowly arch your back upward (cat position) and then drop your stomach downward (cow position). This improves spinal flexibility and reduces stiffness. 🔹 Seated Spinal Twist Sit upright, cross one leg over the other, and gently twist your torso toward the bent knee. This helps relieve nerve compression and improves mobility. 🔹 Pelvic Tilt Exercise Lie on your back with knees bent. Tighten your abdominal muscles and press your lower back into the floor. This nerve runs from the lower back → buttock → back of the leg → foot. Symptoms Common signs include: • Sharp or shooting pain from lower back to leg • Burning or electric-shock–like pain • Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot • Weakness in the leg • Pain that worsens while sitting, coughing, or bending Usually it affects one side of the body. Common Causes • Herniated Disc (most common cause) • Lumbar Spinal Stenosis • Piriformis Syndrome • Degenerative Disc Disease • Injury, prolonged sitting, or poor posture Physiotherapy Exercises (Very Helpful) Since you’re in the physiotherapy field, these are commonly used: 1. Piriformis Stretch • Lie on your back, cross the painful leg over the other knee and gently pull the thigh toward the chest. 2. Knee to Chest Stretch • Pull one knee toward chest while lying on your back. 3. Pelvic Tilt • Tighten abdominal muscles and flatten lower back against the floor. 4. Sciatic Nerve Flossing • Helps glide the nerve and reduce irritation. 5. McKenzie Extension Exercise • Lying prone and pushing upper body up to extend the spine.
