What is Broadcast Spawning?
Broadcast spawning is a reproductive strategy used by most species of reef building coral.
Here, during a specific time window, usually at night, they release their egg-and-sperm bundles into the water simultaneously.
Once released, the egg-sperm bundles drift to the water surface and after about half an hour they break apart and result in fertilized eggs.
The coral embryos then develop into free-swimming larvae and start looking for a suitable place to settle on and grow into new coral colonies.
This reproductive strategy is important for maintaining genetic diversity and thus resilience to environmental stressors.
And it also plays a huge role in our coral restoration approach!
