Not: ❌letter by letter (e.g. in this word, hearing the ‘ew’ and remembering the digraph /ew/) ❌guessing ❌memorising the whole word But by: ✅listening for phonemes (sounds) ✅spotting digraphs/trigraphs ✅writing each sound they hear Phase 5 is all about applying alternative spellings confidently. 💡 “Frustration is a sign that you’re on the path to learning something new!” 💡 In my kindergarten class, we’ve been working on a tricky (but powerful!) new skill: segmenting all the sounds in a word using our fingers, holding those sounds in our short-term memory, and then spelling the word all at once. 🧠✏️ For some kiddos, this clicked right away. For others, it felt tough—and that’s okay! We paused to talk about frustration, and I shared something I’ve learned from @drbeckyatgoodinside : frustration doesn’t mean you can’t do it; it means your brain is working hard to grow and learn something new. 🌱✨ #elementaryteacher #primaryteacher #socialemotionallearning #growthmindsets

⭐️ s a t p i n ⭐️ ⭐️ Singing the alphabet song teaches letter names, not sounds and is in fact holding your child back on their reading journey!! ⭐️ You should teach the letters(s a t p i n) first and then add new letters each time your child masters one, and in a specific order so we can teach children to read words! ⭐️However this must be done alongside ‘Oral Blending’ ⭐️ So what is ORAL BLENDING, it’s the ability to hear the individual sounds in a word and push them back together to read or say the word. ⭐️ This is exactly what children do when they are reading words on a page before they become fluent!
