COI’ve been wanting a write a book since I could read.
But it was only just a dream until a year ago.
I started… and then I stopped at 12,000 words because I was riddled with imposter syndrome.
Fast forward to today, I now have 42,000 words, and though I still have raging imposter syndrome, I’m now in an environment and surrounded by people who have either published a book are in the trenches with me writing one.
It’s hard to do big things alone, so don’t.
80% of people want to write a book, but 1% only do.

SAI’m extremely proud of myself for publishing my debut novel. That moment meant everything to me and it was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
But I didn’t fully understand the publishing landscape, especially for middle grade, which is arguably the hardest market in all publishing.
I had always planned to find an agent for foreign rights and audiobook rights, but self publishing actually took that option off the table. Had I realized that, I would have probably done things differently.
That said, there is never a perfect time to follow your dreams. Sometimes, I wish I had learned more before I published The Gloomlands Chronicles; but I also know if I had waited until I had learned everything I ever could have, I never would have published at all.

COIndie/self publishing doesn’t mean low quality work!!!!
YES there are people who indie publish books and don’t put out quality work, but there are so many extremely talented authors who choose the indie route over the traditional route for a ton of different reasons.
It doesn’t mean someone isn’t “good enough” or has “given up” — and there are also traditionally published books that are not well written!
Publishing a book through any route, indie or traditional, is an incredibly difficult thing — and each path has its own unique challenges.
Some of the reasons I’ve chosen indie publishing over traditional publishing:
🩷 Didn’t want to have to deal with the time and exhaustion of the querying process
🩷 Want to retain full rights to my book
🩷 Want full freedom over design and stylistic choices
🩷 Want a quicker publishing process
🩷 I have a marketing background
Some of the unique challenges I’m facing as an indie author that typically aren’t faced by traditionally published authors:
🩷 Having to pay for EVERYTHING up front (editing, proofreading, formatting, cover design, character art, ISBN, advance reader copies, etc)
🩷 Handling all of my marketing without the backing of a publisher (social media, newsletter, seeking out media opportunities like podcasts, events, etc)
🩷 Handling everything with advance reader copies from application, to selection, to sending
🩷 Figuring out the ins and outs of printing/distribution
People who choose the traditional publishing route have plenty of unique challenges as well — like figuring out the querying process, doing the actual querying process, making decisions about agent offers, making decisions on publishing offers, responsible for doing some marketing on their own/usually paying for book tours out of pocket, etc.
All this to say, both publishing paths have pros and cons. Additionally, with both paths, there are incredible works, mediocre works, and terrible works. And there are also some authors who do both traditional AND indie publishing at the same time.
Let’s end the stigma/judgement towards indie/self-published authors 💘

MERight now, there is something that you dream about doing, but you haven’t started because you don’t feel ready.
I’m living proof that starting before you’re ready and just figuring it out every step of the way - is how you get what you want in life.
Five years ago, I self-published The 5 Second Rule, and I didn’t have a clue what I was doing.
It wasn’t perfect. There are typos in the book and when I recorded the audiobook, I didn’t know you were supposed to edit out the paper shuffling or rereading of sentences, so I just kept it all in, because I didn’t have a clue.
I didn’t have a publisher. My husband @the.chrisrobbins just uploaded my recordings from his MacBook to a platform on @amazon and @audible called ACX.
In September, I finally got around to self publishing a second audiobook, The High 5 Habit. I had a little more experience this time - but that doesn’t mean it was perfect either, or that it was ready when it felt time to record it.
And guess what? None of those imperfections mattered.
What matters is starting.
Start before you’re ready. For God’s sake, stop thinking about all those things you’d love to do, and use my #5SecondRule to turn and walk towards them.
If you don’t, the world will never experience the gifts that only you have to give. You just need to 5-4-3-2-1 find the courage to start chipping away at it.
I just found out I’ve sold over ONE MILLION copies of my self-published audiobooks.
ONE MILLION!!
Now if I had waited until I felt “ready” or until the timing felt “perfect,” I would never be where I am today.
This is your wake up call to stop waiting and start taking action TODAY. You’re never too old and you’re not too late.
Today is when that figure that you dream about begins.

AMI get it, I really do…🛡️
If we keep our shields up + our boundaries strong - we don’t have to face the inevitable sting that comes with failure.
Most especially if we feel like others are watching.
But what if your live event wasn’t supposed to have 100 people and the 25 that came had a life changing experience that lead to you developing a mastermind experience you never would have thought of with 100 people in the room?
What if self publishing saved you the creative freedom you’d have to surrender in a traditional publishing dynamic?
What if your failures were really meant to protect and challenge you into your next level of greatness?
When a client comes into my world - I love to learn about their vision, their goals and their financial targets - but in reality - those elements have the same potential to be a limiter as they do an expander.
Think about it.
What changes when you get on the unstoppable train?
When you say yes to where you are being guided?
When you say no to everything else?
Even your own conditions about what your success could look like…

JOAs an author you have complete control over the words *inside* the book. But the cover design, the marketing copy on the back cover, and even the title itself are chosen by the publisher. They'll certainly consult you and want you to be happy, but ultimately the publisher makes the final call.
I'm talking here about traditional publishing, where a publishing house pays for the right to sell your book. In self publishing (which goes under various names: direct publishing, independent author publisher, vanity press, etc), the money and control go in the opposite direction. That is, you pay for it, you get to call the shots.
The major advantage of a traditional publisher is marketing and large scale distribution, and I consider myself ridiculously fortunate to be partnered with major publishers who have gotten my books shelf space in bookstore nationwide and even big box stores like Walmart and Target.

HETwo years ago today I submitted my manuscript for Your Child Is Not Broken
It feels like yesterday... and it feels like a lifetime ago
The intention with the book was to reach other parents and help them feel less alone.
The bonus was a Sunday Times Bestseller slot, a publishing deal with one of the biggest publishers in the UK, and a house! (The royalties from the book made it possible for me to get a mortgage).
I will be forever grateful to @iamabigailhorne for her support, guidance and mentoring in writing and self publishing.
The work continues.
At EOTAS Matters we continue to offer support, solace and safe spaces for parents and carers whilst they advocate for the Autistic learners in their lives. That's my life's work. My reason for getting up (if not always dressed) The book was just the tip of the iceberg.
My health continues to be a challenge but the work continues. If you are part of the EOTAS Matters Community I want to thank you for being part of the network of incredible parents supporting one another. And supporting me and Theo. I will NEVER take that for granted.

A few tricks to build an online income with self publishing:
✅ don’t sell to cheap customers,
✅ use AI to create the best book covers,
✅ as soon as you’re ready to start, publish straight away, you’ll learn more,
✅ this can be done in your spare time, commit spare time to it.
Btw I should warn you, when your first book sells and you realise you can create big passive income from anywhere and work anytime…. It gets addictive!
