Imagine what could be achieved if resources currently used to criminalize and imprison were redirected into Indigenous communities — into housing, health care, education, and supports that prevent harm before it happens. 2025 saw the third record-breaking wildfire season in a row, made worse by extreme heat records in Canada and rising global temperatures. Municipal infrastructure and services are not equipped for this new normal. FCM’s Executive Director of Policy and Public Affairs, Matt Gemmel, spoke to the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry this morning. Matt highlighted FCM’s position for stronger national coordination measures to respond to these disasters and sustained federal funding to reduce fire risk. Les infrastructures et services municipaux n’ont pas été conçus pour faire face à cette nouvelle norme. Le directeur général de politique et affaires publiques de la FCM, Matt Gemmel, s’est adressé ce matin au Comité sénatorial de l’agriculture et des forêts. Il y a présenté l’avis de la FCM pour une meilleure coordination au pays pour répondre à ces catastrophes et un financement fédéral stable pour réduire les risques de feux de forêt.
