“Silver Springs” was written shortly after Stevie’s breakup with Lindsey Buckingham. The intention behind the song was to make sure the guitarist would never forget about her. In 2009, she told Rolling Stone: “It was me realizing that Lindsey was going to haunt me for the rest of my life, and he has.” The idea behind the song title came from a sign for Silver Spring, Maryland while driving with Buckingham. The name was, to her, so beautiful that she wrote it into the song. Upon completion the song was intended to be released on Rumors, but was omitted due to its length and relatively slow tempo. However, Stevie wanted the song on there, but the rest of the band vetoed the decision. In his book Making Rumours, Ken Caillat described “Silver Springs” as “gorgeous”, “powerful”, and “a masterpiece”. He added, “there was only one problem: I knew the song was too long to fit on the album.” Another suggestion was made to have “Gold Dust Woman” replaced with “Silver Springs”, but that idea was also shot down.
Eventually, the song was banished to the B-Side of the “Go Your Own Way” single. Fleetwood Mac’s 1997 reunion album “The Dance” featured the song. Nicks reflected during a 1997 MTV interview. “My beautiful song just disappeared [20 years ago]. For it to come back around like this has really been special to me.”
