PIKing’s College London has launched a UK clinical trial, Pathway, to evaluate the risks and benefits of puberty blockers for roughly 220 children under 16 experiencing gender incongruence. The study follows the ban on prescribing the drugs outside research settings after the Cass review highlighted limited evidence on safety.
Participants will receive comprehensive medical and psychological assessments before being randomly assigned to begin treatment immediately or after 12 months. Researchers will monitor impacts on bone density, brain development, mental health and overall wellbeing. Initial findings are expected in about four years.
The trial has drawn ethical objections from some clinicians and campaigners, including Keira Bell, who argues the treatment is unsafe and is considering legal action to halt the study. Supporters maintain the research is essential for providing clearer guidance to families and note it has full ethical approval.
