Most people think getting a burst of energy late at night means they’re not tired. But biology says otherwise. Your body runs on a circadian rhythm — an internal clock that controls when you feel alert and when you feel sleepy. In the evening, your brain releases melatonin and lowers core body temperature to prepare for sleep. But if you ignore that first wave of sleepiness, your brain can release a second alertness signal to keep you functioning. Sleep researchers sometimes call this a “second wind.” It happens because your nervous system switches back into alert mode to prevent you from shutting down at the wrong time. Common signs you missed your sleep window: • sudden energy late at night • racing thoughts after feeling tired • urge to start tasks before bed • feeling awake after midnight This doesn’t mean you’re not tired.
