EXJapan has developed piezoelectric floor systems — special tiles that produce small amounts of electric energy when stepped on. The pressure from walking deforms piezoelectric materials inside the tiles, creating an electric charge.
🏙️ Where it’s used
Tokyo train stations (like Tokyo Station and Shibuya Station) have tested these tiles in high-traffic areas.
The energy is used to power LED lights, displays, or sensors nearby.
🧠 How it works (simplified)
1. A piezoelectric material (such as quartz or ceramics) sits beneath the floor surface.
2. When pressure is applied (someone steps on it), the crystal structure deforms.
3. This deformation creates a voltage difference — generating electric current.
4. The small charge is collected and stored in a battery or capacitor, then used for lighting or other low-power devices.
🔋 Real-world results
A square meter of piezoelectric flooring can generate up to 10–20 watts under heavy foot traffic.
Enough to light up signs, decorative LEDs, or small sensors.

MRTilting track wagons! Spotted at Basingstoke yesterday, it’s a @colasrailuk class 70 and some tilting track wagons - used for @networkrail @networkrailsouthern & Western engineering projects. They’re smart solution to a tricky problem, with similar seen all over the UK (and in Europe too, where these wagons tend to be built) and as people on the station looked intrigued by it, I thought I’d do this little explainer.
