This bobtail snipe eel (Cyema atrum) was spotted at 1,941 meters (6,369 feet) in the Monterey Bay. Snipe eels in the family Nemichthyidae have thin, tweezer-like jaws that bend outwards. It was long debated how these fish actually eat, but we now know that they have tiny, backward-facing teeth that work almost like velcro. They use them to capture small crustaceans and bring prey into their mouths with a series of rapid chomps.

DEDo you know the snipe eel? This wild deep-sea dweller looks like something out of a sci-fi flick with its super long, skinny body that can stretch up to 5 feet, but it weighs less than a pound. It's got this crazy beak-like mouth lined with tiny hooked teeth that curve backward to snag shrimp and other small critters as it glides through the dark ocean depths—sometimes as deep as 13,000 feet! Oh, and fun fact: it has more vertebrae in its spine than any other animal on Earth, around 750. Nature's full of surprises down there.

The synaphobranchid eel, aka the cutthroat eel, lives at the bottom of the ocean, snatching up any pieces of dead fish that fall all the way down.
And we mean all the way down.
This deep-sea scavenger was seen almost 4,000 feet deep during an exploration of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument. A different research expedition once recorded a swarm of cutthroat eels at a depth of 9,800 feet.
Located east of the Philippines, the massive Mariana Trench includes millions of acres virtually unknown to humans.

Haters will say this video is fake or made with A.I., while marine biologists will confirm it's real, and called a pelican eel (Eurypharynx pelecanoides), aka a gulper eel.
The mouth is typically folded, but unfolds into a large, inflated shape when hunting, capable of opening up large enough to swallow prey much larger than itself.
They reach up to 3 ft (91.4 cm) in length, and primarily eat crustaceans, fish and cephalopods.
They also have a whip-like tail used for movement, which is also bioluminescent and used for communication.
A terrifyingly-awesome, rare sight to see.

DIElectricity isn’t just a defense. It’s a weapon.
Volta’s electric eel can generate up to 860 volts — the highest voltage recorded in any animal. Unlike true eels, it’s actually a type of knifefish, and nearly 80% of its body is dedicated to specialized electric organs.
When threatened or hunting, the eel curls into a U‑shape. This positioning brings the positive and negative poles of its body closer together, intensifying the electric field through nearby water. The discharge doesn’t look dramatic — but the effect is immediate.
Muscle fibers in the prey depolarize simultaneously. The result is involuntary tetany — full muscle lock. For fish like piranhas, that brief paralysis is enough.
The Amazon’s blackwater rivers are filled with obstacles, roots, and low visibility. In these conditions, electricity becomes both navigation and control. Eels use low‑voltage pulses to sense their environment and high‑voltage bursts to stun prey.
In murky water, vision is limited. But voltage travels.
The strike is invisible — until something stops moving.

OLCruising through the depths with is patterns on full display, this is one of my favourite fish in British Columbia!
Yep that's right, Wolf Eels are in fact fish. Although we call them eels, you can see its pectoral fins as it glides along this rocky pinnacle unlike true eels that lack these appendages.
There's nothing quite like the privilege of observing a Wolf Eel out of its den. This male looks as though it had been out hunting for a meal when it first swam up to us. After a breif hello, with a visibly full belly it was on its way elegantly moving through the dark depths back to its den. It felt like such a honor to capture this moment on a recent Rockfish survey dive with @bcmarinelife and dives buddies @lee_ann_sharp and @amylovemountain
Although the main goal of our survery dives is to observe and document rockfish, it's hard to pass up a moment to film such a beautiful animal. 🥰
