I get this question from my students from time to time 😉 👉Here’s the story behind this video: My husband sent me a clip of @soulboy1537 and asked me to teach him how to dance like that. While digging a bit deeper into what this gentleman is doing, I realized that the step is actually very similar to one we do in Solo Jazz — it’s even part of my Basic Vocabulary of Solo Jazz course! Can you guess which one? Most musicians overcomplicate things and forget the foundation: Start with rhythm. Seriously—just write a few simple rhythms, play around with them, and sing them. Make sure the groove feels good. Once the rhythm flows, then you can start adding notes. Want to learn my exact step-by-step method for creating amazing phrases over any chord progression or musical style? I love playing Solo Jazz guitar, and am currently working on writing some lessons in how I approach this type of “Comping” with shell voicings. These smaller chords are easier to grab in the fly and are GREAT when playing with a bass player as a lot of them are rootless.
