SACommunication Is A Human Right Day 9: How we got started.
I was the mom who was willing to do anything to help my child. Why did I not hear about spelling until Rocco was seven?
Why did a functional medicine doctor have to tell me about it instead of the team of “experts” assigned to him when he was diagnosed?
Why did I, a busy mom and business owner, have to get certified myself in order to unlock his voice when I was told that all the experts were already doing everything they could?
This was the most enormous blessing and I am thankful it unfolded this way, but the bottom line is families shouldn’t have to go to such great lengths to get basic communication supports that actually work.
If you watch Rocco spell now, you’d never believe our start was so messy. But it certainly was, especially when he was a young sensory seeker struggling with intense dysregulation.
As my teacher, the incomparable @rpmsoma says, “Yesterday was the best day to get started. Today is the second best day.”

RPCommunicating a story isn’t just about words — it’s about integration.
Constructing a story requires assembling both visual and auditory learning channels.
To create an event, one must first discover it in the mind (activating the visual channel),

RO🤯BIG WIN😭😭🎉Malachi has recently started Spell 2 Communicate and HE IS BLOWING US AWAY!!!😭
We found out he not only can Read but he can Spell BEYOND his grade level! 😮😮
🤯Note: He has Never been to grade school or been taught to read by me or anyone😭😭 #OnlyGod
We are “Overjoyed” as this song says!!😄
On this day, Malachi started singing the song “Overjoyed” and then I wrote the question “Who sings the song “Overjoyed”? on a white board, and had him to read it with his eyes (without me reading it aloud)
Then he quickly spelled his answer STEVIE WONDER🤯🤯🤯
We had never done this before. This was my first day as led by the HolySpirit to test his reading ability.
He also answered the questions.. “Who died for your sins? JESUS and more😭😭🎉🎉

Incluye herramientas accesobles y robustas, estrategias y dispositivos (tableros, gestos, signos, dispositivos con salida de voz) que aumentan o sustituyen el habla cuando es necesario.
👉 se respeta el cuerpo de la persona, fomenta la mayor autonomía posible y promueve una comunicación multimodal y funcional.
👉 Está respaldada por décadas de investigación y por la posición oficial de ASHA como una intervención ética y basada en evidencia.
🚫 Comunicación Facilitada (Facilitated Communication, FC) y sus derivados como “Spellers” o S2C (Spelling to Communicate)

Esto contradice los principios de autonomía y respeto corporal.

CLDurante muito tempo disseram que pessoas autistas não falantes não pensavam.
Disseram que não entendiam.
Disseram que não tinham muito a dizer.
A história da Carly mostra exatamente o contrário.
Carly faz parte da comunidade de soletradores da SPELLERS, pessoas autistas que encontraram na soletração uma ponte para o pensamento e para a comunicação.
Quando finalmente teve acesso a uma forma de se expressar, o mundo descobriu algo que sempre esteve ali:
uma mente ativa, sensível e cheia de ideias.
Quantos outros pensamentos continuam presos apenas porque ninguém ofereceu o caminho certo para acessá-los?
