FOI have found the answer! Many women I know and hear from are increasingly disheartened by the changes in their bodies during midlife. I understand—I felt the same way. We are entering or in menopause, less active than we used to be, our metabolism isn’t the same, and many other factors play a role.
Here’s what we now know: as you age, you need to eat enough protein (at least 30g per meal), drink plenty of water, move (at least 10,000 steps a day), do weight training at least three times per week, and get a good night’s sleep.
Despite following all this, I still wasn’t happy with my body—I looked “loose.” But don’t worry; I’ve found the secret sauce: barre classes 3-4 times per week. Trust me, I’ve tried all kinds of classes - I’ve been working out almost every day since college (was even a spin instructor for 17 years). That was until I had back issues and underwent two spinal surgeries, which kept me away from barre for over five years, and my body showed it.
Yes, I have to modify my routine a bit, but I push myself as much as my body allows and have been reaping the benefits. Will my body be perfect? No. Will I stop aging? No. But I will do my best to keep my body as strong as possible and enjoy the rewards that come with it.
What is barre? It’s a fitness workout inspired by ballet. It combines elements of ballet, Pilates, yoga, and strength training. Participants use a ballet barre for balance and support while performing various exercises designed to improve strength, flexibility, and posture. The workout typically focuses on small, controlled movements and high repetitions, targeting specific muscle groups to help tone and sculpt the body.
My two favorite barre studios are @thebarmethod (I go to @barmethodroslyn) and @exhale.fitspalife. But do a search and try a few until you find a studio/format that you like and go at least 3x per week. You e got this!

Something from a different time in your life that most people don’t know about?
I have a few … one of my faves is that I was a spin instructor for a couple years right after babies, right before traveling for work all the time.
There was something super fulfilling (and also super anxiety-inducing) about guiding a group of people through a physically grueling (in our classes, you didn’t sit down) and mentally challenging experience.
And every once in a while — usually if I’m riding alone on my roof or Shazam a great song — I dream of putting together just one more playlist. 😊
