The crew was then flown by helicopter to the recovery ship USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26) where they could be seen walking unassisted across the flight deck. All four astronauts were confirmed "green," meaning they are healthy and in great spirits. 📍 The Journey in Numbers: 10-day mission duration, covering nearly 1.4 million miles through deep space. Reached a staggering 252,756 miles (406,771 km) from Earth — the farthest distance any human has ever traveled, breaking the 56-year-old record set by Apollo 13 in 1970. Reentered Earth's atmosphere at 24,661 mph (Mach 32) — more than 30 times the speed of sound — with the heat shield enduring half the temperature of the Sun's surface. 🌌 Mission Achievements & Historic Firsts: This wasn't just about distance. Artemis II rewrote the record books: Christina Koch became the first woman to fly around the Moon. Victor Glover became the first person of color on a lunar mission. Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) became the first non-American astronaut to fly around the Moon. The crew captured the highest-resolution Moon photos ever taken, revealing never-before-seen features on the lunar far side including rugged mountains, impact basins, and ancient lava plains. They also witnessed six meteoroid impact flashes on the Moon's surface and observed a nearly hour-long total solar eclipse from lunar orbit.
