Many modern databases never actually "overwrite" your data when you perform an update. Instead, they use a technique called Multi-Version Concurrency Control (MVCC), where the system keeps the old version of your information and simply writes a brand-new one next to it with a timestamp. This allows multiple people to read and write simultaneously without crashing into each other. However, this creates "ghost data" over time, requiring the database to periodically run a background process called "Vacuuming" to sweep away the obsolete versions and reclaim storage space.
