Failed step 1 is different from a failed step 2 CK or a very low score in step 2 CK, and the hardships would look different but even in that case what you would need is a great counselor/mentor to explain you the whole situation and give you a clear and realistic perspective into things before you make a decision. Failing step 1 was an awful experience. I studied for twice as long for the first attempt and then failed. The frustrating part was being told “no one fails step” or “you won’t fail” with so much confidence. Medical students and faculty say this because they assume since they’ve never met someone who failed, people don’t fail. I’m sad to report that people fail step. And when I was in search of someone to tell me “I failed and I’m a great doctor” it was impossible. I was fortunate to hear encouragement still, and after a week of depression I established a PLAN. In this plan I was 100% committed to a schedule, I convinced myself that step 1 was my job and I’d be working over time within reason. On the second attempt I decided I would follow my data by any means, and if I wasn’t passing my practice exam (which I hadn’t been) I wasn’t taking it *crosses arms*. To those wondering why I took it before I was ready: my school had a strong timeline I felt pressured to follow. I also let comparison dictate my decision. I wanted to be in clerkships with my friends, I wanted to enjoy the summer, wanted to be back in the groove. But falling “out of the grove” doesn’t mean you fall out of line for your passion. And the crazy thing is “falling out of the groove” meant I fell into a NEW GROOVE. So, as shameful as this experience was, I’m no longer afraid to admit it.
