ANReady to *literally* weave a tale? Let’s string together some magic in your next storytelling session.
Kids are hungry for magic. A typical string could be simple and unexciting but with a bit of imagination, hand-eye coordination, and storytelling skills, you can transform it into something magical.
WHY it works
🌈 Multiliteracies in action: It’s visual, kinesthetic, gestural and oral—perfect for children learning a new language and enhancing their ability to integrate different sensory stimuli.
Multiliteracies involve engaging multiple senses and forms of communication, helping children develop a richer understanding of language and storytelling.
☀️ Sparks imagination: Each child interprets the string figures uniquely, imagining what those outlines could represent based on their own experiences.
When you make a ‘seesaw’ with a string, kids’ brains will fill in the image with what they know a seesaw look likes.
🪄 Engaging and entertaining: It’s like having a puppet but with a string. Kids love the interactive element and the tactile experience.
Kids are inspired to retell the story. With a simple patterned story and easy-to-make figures, they’ll dive right into telling the story themselves.
HOW it works
1️⃣ Have a story. Choose a tale that’s fun to tell and resonates with your audience.
2️⃣ Note keywords. Identify the key elements or characters in the story. For example, if your story includes a spider, mountain and river, these would be your keywords.
3️⃣ Create string figures. Design string shapes for those keywords. Remember, you can move and position the string in various ways.
To make a string figure, loop the string around your fingers and manipulate it to create shapes.
4️⃣ Practice. Coordinate your storytelling with the movements of your hands to bring the figures to life. Then practice some more. Trust me, it’s going to be second nature once you get to do it over and over again.
