🌞 Anthotype Sun Printing with Turmeric 🌿✨ We’ve been exploring the alchemical magic of Anthotypes — a beautiful and ancient photographic process that uses plant pigments and sunlight to create natural prints. More accessible than cyanotypes, Anthotypes require no camera, just patience, sunlight, and a bit of trust in the process. We mixed: 🟡 1 tsp turmeric 🧴 4–6 tsp antibacterial hand gel …to create our own natural light-sensitive emulsion. 📄 We used 250gsm mixed media paper (important — it needs to hold up to a rinse in water + baking soda). 🎨 Paint the paper, let it dry in a dark place, then when ready creatively arrange your foraged items on top. Ferns today worked really well 🔲 Secure under a plastic sheet (glass or plexiglass is best) on a flat surface in direct sunlight. ⏳ We only had 2 hours, so our prints came out lighter — but ideally aim for 4–6 hours or more for bolder results. 💧 Rinse gently in a bowl of baking soda + water, then hang to dry. You’ll see more reactions as it dries — if we’d had longer, the turmeric would’ve shifted to a deeper reddish hue. It’s that time of year where I get to make sun printed shirts 😍 They’re available for pre-order in my shop…but if you want to learn how to make these yourself just visit my bio! I have a tutorial that walks you through the products you need and the steps I take to achieve the final result. Just warning you that this can be a very time consuming process that takes a lot of trial and error. But don’t give up! If I can do it, you definitely can 💪🏽 Some commonly asked questions I get are: • What do you put in between the shirt? A thin piece of foam/cardboard • How long do you leave out in the sun? 20 minutes when the sun is highest in the sky (this is between 12PM and 2PM for me in SoCal) • Does it work on black shirts? Yes, if you bleach the section you want your print to show up on • Won’t it get darker when I wear it? No, you have to use SolarFast Detergent after exposure to stop the process otherwise the dye will keep developing and turn into one huge block of color. • Does the image fade in the wash? Initially it will slightly fade from first wash, but then after this your image is set! From my experience of doing this (3 years) no it does not seem to fade after washing. I still have shirts with the same print quality from years ago! •How do you get the negative? I inverse my image in photoshop and then print onto transfer paper I buy from Staples! Make your own sun prints with a few simple ingredients! I’m so excited with how mine turned out - the colors are perfect for fall! Supplies: turmeric powder, rubbing alcohol, baking soda, coffee filter (Comment “shop” and I’ll DM you a link to my supplies list!) Instructions: 🍁 Mix 1 tablespoon turmeric and ¼ cup rubbing alcohol in a jar. Pour mixture through a coffee filter. 🍁 Use a paintbrush to paint 1 coat of the turmeric mixture onto paper of your choice. (Store unused liquid for another day!) 🍁 Arrange leaves, grass, paper cutouts, etc., and place a sheet of glass on top. I used glass from picture frames. 🍁 Place your prints in direct sunlight for several hours. 🍁 Sprinkle baking soda into a tray of water and mix until it’s absorbed. 🍁 Briefly submerge your print in the tray of water. Lay it flat on a towel to dry. The colors will darken as it dries. This was also a really big hit with my kids and they made some prints of their own. One batch of mixture will make lots of prints! *Warning - it does stain, so be careful!* Rustic, reclaimed wood pumpkins and more are available in my Etsy shop (link in my bio).
