MOScientific Classification: An Impressionistic Lesson
My children and I have been learning about the classification of living things on Earth, focusing on the 3 domains and 3 kingdoms of the tree of life. I recently saw this lesson in my @montessoritubeacademy subscription and knew I wanted to share it with my kids.
I actually placed a divider between them so they couldn’t see each other’s work. I invited them to sort their pile of buttons in whatever way they saw fit. Originally, my 8-year-old started sorting them simply by number of holes. He noticed this was creating two very large piles and so he further divided each pile by color. At the end, he had three outliers, which did not have either two or four holes.
Meanwhile, my six-year-old originally started sorting by color, which I was positive he was going to based on past experience. But then I watched him completely switch his methodology, and he began sorting them into piles that I could not immediately recognize until I noticed one pile was filled with translucent buttons.
When they both finished, I removed the divider, and they explained to each other how they organized their buttons.
We discussed how they each chose a different way to organize and how scientists have to make decisions to classify their data. My 8-year-old said, “and that’s why some scientists disagree with each other!” We discussed how it can be useful to categorize things a certain way but that we can look at information from a variety of perspectives. They are already aware of this as some people still use the outdated language of five kingdoms while our tree of life from Dr. Priscilla Spears focuses on 3 domains (with only 3 true kingdoms-plant, animal, fungi).
I did ask my 8-year-old about his 3 outlying buttons. He said they didn’t really fit well together anywhere and we decided they were like the protists and could just be lumped together.😅

KCGreetings, fellow science enthusiasts! This wiggling creature is called a ‘larvacean’ and it’s one of our favorite marine #zooplankton to find in our samples. 🔬
🔎 Although its name makes it sound like the larval stage of some larger creature, it’s not and the tadpole-like appearance is its signature look. #Larvaceans can be found in coastal marine waters globally and belong to the taxonomic class “Appendicularia”. This type of larvacean is called Oikopleura dioica and is commonly found in samples from #PugetSound. This video was captured with 100x magnification.
🔍 Larvaceans are filter feeders and build a gelatinous ‘house’ around themselves that acts like a big net, capturing plenty of food particles and funneling them into the mouth. Once a house becomes clogged with particles, it is shed and a new one created to keep the snacks coming.
🔎 A single larvacean can build as many as 6 houses per day! Discarded larvacean houses are a major source of marine snow, the name given to aggregations of organic materials that slowly sink from the upper layers of the water column to the ocean floor.
