Short Circuit Test (Impedance Test) – Transformer
📌 What is the Short Circuit Test?
The Short Circuit Test, also called the Impedance Test, is performed on a transformer to determine:
🔹 Copper losses (Full-load copper loss)
🔹 Equivalent impedance (Zₑq)
🔹 Equivalent resistance (Rₑq)
🔹 Equivalent reactance (Xₑq)
🎯 Purpose of the Test
To calculate copper losses at full load
To determine equivalent circuit parameters
To help in calculating voltage regulation
To assess transformer performance without loading it fully
⚙️ Why is it Called “Short Circuit” Test?
Because:
One winding (usually low-voltage winding) is short-circuited
A low voltage is applied to the other winding (usually high-voltage side)
Only about 5–10% of rated voltage is needed to circulate full-load current
Since applied voltage is small:
Core flux is very low
Iron losses are negligible
Wattmeter reading ≈ Copper loss
🔌 Test Setup
Short-circuit the LV winding
Apply reduced voltage to HV winding
Increase voltage gradually until rated current flows
Record:
Voltmeter reading (Vsc)
Ammeter reading (Isc)
Wattmeter reading (Wsc)
📐 Calculations
Let:
� = Applied voltage
� = Short circuit current
� = Wattmeter reading

🔥 Important Notes
Core loss is neglected
Copper loss = Wattmeter reading
