This moment likely captures the peak deceleration during a Pugachev’s Cobra or a vertical tailslide — where the aircraft reaches an extreme Angle of Attack (AoA) far beyond the wing’s normal stall limit.
So how does it stay controllable?
The answer lies in the Flanker’s relaxed static stability and its powerful Leading Edge Root Extensions (LERX). At these insane angles, LERX-generated vortices keep airflow attached over the fuselage and vertical stabilizers, preserving directional control even when the wings are fully stalled.
In this maneuver, the pilot has disengaged the AoA (alpha) limiter. Without thrust vectoring on this base model, recovery depends entirely on the aircraft’s natural nose-down pitching moment once the stick is centered and the aerodynamic center shifts forward.
The Lyulka AL-31F engines play a critical role — not just for thrust, but for their ability to tolerate extreme inlet airflow distortion at 90°+ AoA without surging.

NASA’s F-15 ACTIVE (NF-15B-837) combined two moveable canards (modified F/A-18 stabilators) with axisymmetric, two-axis thrust-vectoring nozzles and a quad-redundant digital FBW system. The airframe served as a 1990s testbed for ACTIVE/STOL-MTD/IFCS research, expanding the F-15’s controllable envelope far beyond standard fighter norms.
Flight results were concrete: thrust-vectoring delivered up to 33% improved pitch rate and over 50% improvement in roll rate where conventional control was degraded. STOL/MTD trials cut takeoff roll by ~25% and enabled rotation at speeds as low as 42 mph, proving vectored thrust’s power. Canards shifted lift forward, delayed flow separation at high-alpha, and TVC supplied direct control moments when airflow blanked normal surfaces—allowing safe, controllable post-stall flight. The payoff: tighter turns, greater departure resistance, and post-stall agility, even at the cost of greater weight and complexity.
