It worked on a simple but effective principle: water either flowed out of or into a container at a controlled rate, and the change in water level was used to track time. In the most common design, a vessel filled with water had a small hole at the bottom, allowing water to drip out gradually. As the water level dropped, markings inside the container indicated the passage of time. Another version worked in reverse—water slowly filled a container, and the rising level marked time intervals. The clepsydra was widely used in ancient Greek courts to limit how long someone could speak, ensuring fairness during trials. It was also used for keeping time at night, when sundials were ineffective. More advanced versions later included gears and indicators, making them more precise. The key idea behind its function is controlled flow—as long as water moves at a steady rate, time can be measured reliably.
