OJTouchDesigner seemed really scary when I was starting out. There were a few YouTube channels that really helped me understand some of the basic concepts: mostly polyhop, supermarket sallad and anya marina.
One thing I don’t love about certain YT tutorials is that they instruct you to set certain parameters to certain values without explaining why. This makes you very good at creating exact replicas of certain effects but very bad at making anything else.

LOHow I made this real-time animation in touchdesigner ★
1. Use the Media pipe plugin
2. In Media pipe enable ‘Hand tracking’ and generate GUI
3. Create a ‘Base’ COMP and creat an ‘In’ CHOP inside it which will contain all our tracking data
4. Connect the two ‘Hand tracking’ and ‘Base’ COMP together
5. Inside ‘Base’ COMP create ‘Select’ CHOP name it ‘h1:*:x’ connect it to a ‘Shuffle’ CHOP and rename the common value to ‘tx’
6. Do the same for all the remanning ‘y’ and ‘z’ axis
7. Merge all these channels into one
8. Then add 3 ‘Math’ CHOP’s in the 1st: set ‘Post-ad’ to ‘-0.5’ , 2nd: set ‘scope’ ‘ty’ and ‘multiply’ to ‘-0.5625’ for 16:9 video, 3rd: ‘Scope’ to ‘ty’, ‘Multiply’ to ‘1’
9. Add a ‘Noise’ CHOP set to ‘r g b’ for colour
10. Connect ‘Math’ and ‘Noise’ to a ‘Merge’ CHOP
11. Copy the entire select chain for the other hand, do the renaming
12. Connect a ‘Chop To’ SOP, Channel scope add: ‘ r g b’ , Attribute scope: Cd0, Cd1, Cd2
13. Merge both of the hands data using a ‘Sop To’ POP then add ‘Proximity’ POP
14. Connect it to ‘Pop To’ SOP and then add ‘Geometry’ COMP
15. Apply a ‘Constant’ MAT to the ‘Geometry’ COMP
16. Create ‘Camera’ COMP set projection to ‘Orthographic’
17. Then use a ‘Composite’ TOP and layer the ‘Render’ over the video
18. Thats when you get the real-time effect!

OKIn @touchdesigner you can turn any video into a particle system with displacement in just a few steps. Start with a Movie File In, connect a TOP to POP, and choose Height R to control the displacement. Add two Randoms — one for scale, one for rotation — and use a Copy SOP with a tiny box to instance your points. Add lights, shadows, and depth… and you’ve got a living, breathing particle world from your video.

ST✋👌🤏Another handtracking project made in TouchDesigner! For this one, I used a 3D scan of an artichoke flower and applied a few techniques I’ve picked up recently. Most notably, using the ‘switch TOP’ and also creating chromatic aberration with the RGB delay component. Big thanks to ‘Supermarket Sallad’ @simondavidryden on YouTube for that tutorial, I also grabbed some loops off Splice and referenced them to my hand gestures so the sounds were triggered with the movement.
🧠 I’ve been pushing myself to do one of these weekly, and it’s paying off because I’m starting to wrap my brain around the hand-tracking data in the MediaPipe component and how to use it. There’s something so satisfying about reaching that point where you start to grasp the ‘why’ behind the technical stuff, not just the ‘how.’ It feels good to know that each time I make one, I reference the tutorials less and less. My goal by the end of the year is to feel confident enough to experiment freely without needing a tutorial at all.
