Setting the pulley to a high position and using an overhand (pronated) grip for cable triceps pushdowns activates all three heads of the triceps, with greater emphasis on the lateral head. Switching to an underhand (supinated) grip works slightly more of the medial head. To better target the long head, lower the pulley to chest height, face away from the machine, and perform overhead triceps extensions—this position places the long head under a greater stretch, enhancing its engagement. Tricep push downs are an isolation exercise, so let’s lock in our form and put those triceps to work 🙌 This movement is all about keeping the tension in our triceps and not letting other muscle groups or a limited range of motion take away from the work we need them to do. ⭐️ Lean forwards slightly and let those forearms kiss your biceps at the top of the movement for a better full range of motion for strength gains. ⭐️ Isolate your triceps by keeping your upper arms and elbows in place as you push down without extending your lats and shoulders. Despite what some people will tell you, doing underhand tricep pushdowns hits the same part of your tricep as overhand but it puts your wrist in an uncomfortable position and you can’t lift as much weight. You’re better off sticking with overhand. Instead of standing upright, lean slightly forward to get a more effective range of motion. Although there’s nothing wrong with using one rope, if you use two, you’ll be able to get a better contraction at the bottom.
