A dive with 9 tiger sharks! 😮 Seeing shark numbers like this is quite rare unfortunately, but actually a sign of a healthy oceans ecosystem! Sharks at the top of the food chain help keep the lower trophic levels in balance & in check so more sharks means more fish & more balance in the ecosystem! They are still top predators though so interacting with them should be done with extreme cautioun & by those with a lot of experience! If this was a tour, the guests would be holding onto a line while the guides work to keep the sharks lower in the water column for safety rather than allowing them to all swim near the surface. Some wonder why shark tourism is important & it allows us to introduce people to sharks which makes people care more about them. This is the opposite of what happened in the Jaws era where people were scared of the unknown. Shark tourism allows governments to see the financial benefit from tourism vs killing them for their fins & meat. Sadly, governments make many decisions based in economic factors & there are still many places around the world that allow killing of sharks. Did you know that hawaii had a shark cull in 1959-1976 killing 4,668 sharks to make the beaches “safer”?! When scientists refer to phytoplankton as primary producers, it’s implied that they kickstart the aquatic food chain. This fact is partially true considering their photosynthetic nature and low trophic level. But an unlikely contributor makes their survival and, therefore, the entire rest of the food web’s survival possible. As the phytoplankton’s main source of food, whale poop functions as an essential cornerstone of all ocean life! Due to their colossal size, it’s no shock that the blue whale is a vital component of the global ocean’s ecosystem, but the interactions that bring truth to that statement are extensive and sometimes unexpected. As a single living, breathing, linked body, our ocean thrives as one, and all around the world, it connects us. With every person reliant on its health, a collective conservation effort becomes essential. The @Ourocean2023 conference recognizes this inherent unity, and provides a place where nations, stakeholders, and civilians can gather and work together toward a healthier, more sustainable ocean. Using technology, economic assessment, knowledge, and science, Our Ocean sets in motion actionable and well-informed conservation initiatives. Yellowstone — the most dramatic glow-up 🐺 In 1995, 14 gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone from Canada. As they increased in number, a trophic cascade began. Wolves rebalanced ecosystems across multiple layers of the food web. Rebalancing elk and deer populations allowed willows and aspen to return to the landscape. Stabilized riverbanks allowed rivers to recover and flow in new directions. Songbirds returned, as did beavers, eagles, foxes, and badgers. The Lamar Valley riverbanks in particular look completely different — bare and eroded in the 90s, lush and vegetated today. I am talking about regular glucose spikes that we get from processed foods and excessive sugar. Skin sagging and wrinkles are due to a wide variety of cellular disfunction. These include diminished number and function of proteins like collagen, reduced blood flow, and less cell turnover. Excess sugar in our bodies speeds up these processes. Glycation is a process by which a sugar molecule bonds to a protein or fat in our cells, forming Advanced Glucose Ends products ( AGEs). Glycation can affect all our tissues. Our skins are particularly susceptible because of how collagen and sugar interact. Glycation alters normal collagen function.
