💥This is a right - not a nice to have. The rights of children and young people to participate in decision-making affecting them, and to have their voices heard and heeded, are underpinned by Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and Article 24 of the European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights. Ireland ratified the UNCRC in 1992 and committed to ensuring children and young people have a say in the decisions impacting their lives. Comhairle na nÓg child and youth councils operate in each of the 31 Local Authority areas across Ireland. The councils enable young people aged 12-17 to exercise their right in influencing decision-makers on the topics most important to them. Young voices matter. Did you know that every child and youth has a right to live a life free from discrimination, including that from the stigma of a parents substance use, a right to access stigma free information about navigating their challenges, and a right to play, learn, and enjoy life without the fear of what people will say or do when they need to seek out support? Many of us didn’t and still today, many young people don’t get to experience this right. That’s why we exist! Since Starlings was born we have used a children’s rights lens to guide our work, advocating for and creating more supports and resources to ensure young people experience these rights! If you care deeply about justice, healing, and making sure young people growing up with the stigma of a parent’s substance use can access resources and support with our fear of stigma towards them or their family, you should join us! The Youth Advocacy Council at Starlings Community is a space for youth and young adults (ages 16–28) who have been affected by the *stigma of a parent’s substance use who are wanting to speak up, build collective power, and challenge the systems that have too often failed our families. As a council member, we want to make sure our younger peers can navigate these challenges without shame or fear. So you’ll help co-create resources and tools that help shift the conversation, from silence and shame to rights, recognition, and respect. Together, we’ll show how stigma is a children’s rights issue and push for change that centers young people, supports families, and makes space for real stories and real solutions. This is about making sure young people know their rights, feel less alone, and are included in shaping the world we’re inheriting. I had the chance to hear Norman Finkelstein speak in person this evening and it was incredible. 🤓 He has been my go-to for deepening my understanding of the Palestinian ‘conflict’ for years - always grounded in facts and so thought provoking. 🇵🇸 I have so much respect for this man and hearing him speak live (without being interrupted and spoken over) was both inspiring and eye-opening. Some things seem obvious now, like every child having the right to go to school, to feel safe, to play, and to be heard. Yet every one of those rights was fought for, debated, and eventually written into international law. This Children’s Week (18–26 October 2025), the theme reminds us that everyone should know about children’s rights. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) sets out 42 rights for children and another 12 articles explaining how governments must uphold and monitor them. Together they form the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history, a global commitment to protecting childhood and listening to children’s voices. At the Churchill Trust, we have so many Fellows who are putting these principles into action and here are just a few: - Niroshini Kennedy (2018) is designing integrated models of care for Aboriginal children in out-of-home care, ensuring cultural safety and connection. - Megan Gilmour (2016) is transforming how seriously ill children stay connected to learning. - Julie Stone (2001) is leading innovation in early intervention and family support and helping others continue this mission through sponsorship. - Amber Fabry (2022) is reimagining child welfare systems to better support families and prevent child removal.
