BEHackers are now using invisible Unicode characters to hide malicious code in plain sight, a technique known as the Glassworm attack. By exploiting features like the Right-to-Left Override, attackers can trick developers into thinking they are reviewing harmless comments or filenames while the system executes a backdoor. This vulnerability is particularly dangerous because these characters remain hidden in many popular code editors and package registries.
To protect your projects, you should enable settings like render whitespace or Unicode highlighting in your IDE to expose these hidden threats. It is also vital to verify all dependencies and monitor your infrastructure for unexpected behavior. CAThis news was last week, but I didn’t catch it until now after the holiday. In September 2025, the Unicode Consortium officially approved the gender-neutral Chinese character (X也) for inclusion in Unicode 17.0. That means we will have a new Chinese character to learn/type.
For context, we often used 他 as a gender-neutral pronoun for him/her. However, if we know the gender is a female, we would replace 亻 on the left side of the character with 女to type 她. If the object is not a person, we often used 它, which could be used for animal too. With the introduction of a new Chinese character, people can choose to replace the left side of the character with X to become X也, but the pronunciation will remain the same.
