CAIf you pay rent to any relative to save taxes because of HRA, then you can’t miss this proposed change in the Income Tax laws from 1st April 2026...
As per the Draft Income Tax Rules 2026... you will have to file a Form 124 with your employer at the time of claiming HRA in case the rent paid during the year is more than Rs 1 Lakh for the year or more than approx Rs 8300 per month.
This Form specifically requires you to mention if you are paying rent to any relative, which could be a parent, a sibling, spouse or in-laws, and then details of your relationship, their full name and PAN.
It is expected that the tax department will then match the following things at the back end:
a) Is the rent paid justified as per market rate of rental in that area or is calculated only to maximise your HRA deduction
b) Is the property actually in the name of the person to whom you are paying rent to, or in some other family member’s name - at times, people pay rent to the mother, but the property is in the name of the father, for example, or in joint name
c) Is the rent paid through banking channels every month to the landlord, and not once or twice a year, or at the end of the year when the employer asks for declaration
d) Is there a legitimate rent agreement, and monthly rent receipts for the same
e) Has the landlord shown the rent in their income tax return and paid tax on it
If they find some of these things incomplete, then it may attract scrutiny and notices from the tax department because they would think you are doing it to avoid taxes rather than as a legitimate transaction.
Further, there would be penalties of up to 200% of the tax amount in case the transaction is found to not be genuine.
This rule is currentlly a draft, but is expected to come into force soon, so highly recommend people correct any gaps in the documentation or compliance, if any.

NO@fubarpac “That one time when the U.S. government announced that beginning in December of this year, all eligible males will be automatically signed up for the draft - an escalation from what was previously a mandated self-registration.
Under the Fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act which went into effect late last year, the Selective Service System will now be able to tap into existing government data, such as Social Security Administration information, to automatically register all
18- to 26-year-old men. The deadline to implement the system is in December of this year.
Previously, men were required to register themselves for the draft when they turned 18. Failure to do so was considered a felony and carried potential financial fines and even prison time. In 40 states, it also limited their ability to receive a driver’s license.
Opponents of automatic registration believe allowing the Selective Service System to access other government databases is an invasion of privacy.
The system may also automatically register men who are ineligible to serve, like those with certain disabilities. It would then be on those individuals to notify the government that they were registered incorrectly.

Most salaried people are about to miss this.
From April 2026, draft Income Tax Rules propose increasing meal voucher exemption from ₹50 to ₹200 per meal.
₹200 × 2 meals × 22 working days = ₹8,800 per month.
That’s ₹1.05 lakh per year tax-free.
Earlier limit? ₹26,400.
Extra tax-free income: ₹79,200.
In 30% bracket, that’s ~₹24,710 saved.
Even at 20%, you save ₹15,840.
But this only works if your company structures it into your CTC via meal cards like Sodexo, Pluxee or Zaggle. HRs won’t automatically add it. You have to ask before FY26 salary structures are locked.
Under the old regime, this is clearly tax-free.
Under the new regime, meal cards were earlier taxable under Section 115BAC. The draft 2026 rules have removed that blocking clause, which opens the door for tax-free treatment in both regimes. But we’re still waiting for final notification clarity.
So don’t assume. Confirm with HR. And stay tuned for the official wording update.
