The “Everlasting Love” scene is heightened, but it’s not particularly a fantasy sequence. Cut to Jude Hill, so you know it’s through his eyes, but how real that is wasn’t clear to me the entire time. I’m curious if you guys decided for yourself how realistic it was and if that mattered to playing it?
Jamie :Well, you see, I think there’s a lot going on there. There’s a lot about the physicality of the day and the practicality of that day, having all those different players in the room. They were all but Ciarán [Hinds], for obvious reasons. Having us all in that room was an amazing feeling, but we had a lot of work to do. At the time, I hadn’t recorded my vocals, so I’m lip-synching, which is more complicated than people think it is, [then] the dance moves, which are very complicated if you have two left feet like me. Then, there’s all the technical stuff that you have to think about, no matter how much work you’ve done, they’re taking up space in your head.
But really at the heart of that, is the emotional stuff that’s going on and the telling of the story is hugely crucial. The release of what just happened, just burying your father and the release of that, and then trying to celebrate his life in that moment. But even where mom and dad are, their relationship at the time is huge. It’s really fractured. I’m kind of on the edge there, so there’s so much transmission of that through the looks between me and Caitríona [Balfe]. but guess what? I love you and that’s okay. It will all be fine. We will overcome all this.(…)
