CATo read a VIN, you only need to focus on a few specific positions to get the most important info. The 1st character tells you the country where the car was built, such as 1 for the USA or J for Japan. The 2nd and 3rd characters identify the manufacturer, like HG for Honda or 1G for General Motors. Then, the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th characters act as a code for the vehicle's "guts," revealing the specific engine type and body style chosen by the maker.
The second half of the number identifies the specific unit and its birth date. The 10th character is the most important for owners because it reveals the model year; for example, S stands for 2025 and T stands for 2026. The 11th character points to the exact factory or "plant" where the car was put together. Finally, the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th characters are the unique serial number, which distinguishes your car from every other identical model that rolled off the assembly line that year.

PEMost people stare at a VIN and assume it’s just random, but it’s literally the car’s ID card, and once you know what the positions mean you can learn a lot before you waste time on a sketchy listing. VINs have been around since the 1950s, but the big reason they’re useful today is because the US standardized the 17 character format in 1981, before that every manufacturer basically did their own thing. One quick giveaway is that real VINs skip I, O, and Q so nobody confuses them with 1 and 0. The first three characters are the WMI, which points to the manufacturer and where it was built, then 4 to 8 describe the vehicle in a brand specific way, 9 is the check digit that uses math to catch mistyped or swapped VINs, 10 is the model year code, 11 is the assembly plant, and 12 to 17 is the serial number. Extra tip, the 10th digit repeats in cycles, so if you want the exact year every time you still confirm with a decoder, but it’s perfect for quick spotting if a listing is lying. Each digit in your 17-character VIN provides specific information:
