Here are 5 essential VXLAN troubleshooting steps to help you quickly diagnose and fix problems. 🚀 🔹 Step 1: Check the Underlay Network ✅ Make sure VTEPs can ping each other. ✅ Verify that routing protocols like OSPF or BGP are set up correctly. 🔹 Step 2: Check mcast or EVPN (if applicable) ✅ If using multicast, verify proper configuration. ✅ If using MP-BGP EVPN, check that BGP neighbors are up and routes are being exchanged. 🔹 Step 3: Verify VTEP & NVE States ✅ Run show nve interface and show nve peers to check configurations. ✅ Ensure VTEPs are properly connected. 🔹 Step 4: Validate VNI & VLAN Mapping ✅ Check that VNIs are mapped correctly to VLANs. ✅ Make sure they are in the UP state (show me vni). 🔹 Step 5: Check MTU Settings ✅ Set Jumbo MTU (9000 bytes) for VXLAN. ✅ Ensure all interfaces have the same MTU setting. save & share with your Network engineers! EVPN-VXLAN Spine–Leaf Fabric | Junos vEX Lab Validation via Anand 👏👏 I recently completed a multi-leaf, dual-spine EVPN-VXLAN lab using Juniper vEX switches, and wanted to share a quick walkthrough of the design and validation results. 🔹 Topology Overview 1. 2 Spine switches acting as EVPN Route Servers 2. 4 Leaf switches acting as VTEPs 3. eBGP underlay using /30 point-to-point links 4. iBGP EVPN overlay using loopback addresses 5. VXLAN with symmetric IRB for inter-VLAN routing 6. VLANs extended across the fabric: VLAN 10, 20, 30, 40 7. End hosts connected to different leaves across different VLANs 🔹 Control Plane Validation 1. BGP Underlay: All leaf–spine eBGP sessions are established Underlay reachability confirmed via loopbacks 2. EVPN Overlay (bgp.evpn.0): EVPN Type-2 (MAC/IP) and Type-5 (IP Prefix) routes were successfully exchanged Spines are correctly acting as EVPN route servers 3. EVPN Database: MAC and IP routes are learned locally and remotely Active sources correctly pointing to remote VTEPs IRB MACs advertised and learned across all leaves 🔹 Data Plane Validation 1. VXLAN Tunnels: Remote MACs installed via vtep.* interfaces No flooding issues observed 2. Ethernet Switching Table: Local MACs learned on access ports Remote MACs learned via VXLAN (DR/DRP flags as expected) 3. End-to-End Connectivity: Successful inter-VLAN and inter-leaf ping tests Hosts in VLAN 10, 20, 30, and 40 can communicate seamlessly across the fabric 🔹 Key Takeaways ✅ EVPN control plane working as expected ✅ VXLAN data plane forwarding validated ✅ Symmetric IRB enables scalable L3 routing ✅ Fabric behaves like a single logical switch from the host perspective This lab really helped solidify how EVPN distributes MAC/IP reachability, how spines simplify the control plane, and how VXLAN enables scalable L2/L3 overlays in modern data centers. #education #networkengineer #networking #technology #security network tech fblifestyle ITSupport

It is a network virtualization technology developed by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Virtual Extensible LAN is an extension to classic VLANs (Virtual Local Area Network). It is basically a multi-point tunnelling technology. Virtual Extensible LAN basically encapsulates a layer 2 Ethernet frame into UDP packet and after that it transmit it over layer 3 network. As you see, here, layer 2 and layer 3 technologies are used together. As a summary, VXLAN is the tunneling technology which allows overlaying a Layer 2 network over a Layer 3 underlay with use of any IP routing protocol. IKE is a key management and negotiation protocol used to establish IPSec tunnels. It is not a standalone connectivity solution. C. GRE.
