It survives the deep ocean by having a jelly-like body instead of heavy bones or a normal swim bladder. Scientists officially classified this fascinating creature back in 1926, though it didn't become an internet legend until a deep-sea expedition accidentally pulled one up off the coast of New Zealand in 2003. You can only find them in the pitch-black, freezing waters off mainland Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand.
