1. Do I have a drip system? Nope. I water my plants for the first 4-6 weeks after planting them and then once they’re established I don’t have to water them anymore. (Plants in pots will still need water daily: evening or early am). *this is true for our zone, zone 7b… I know those in hotter zones do still need a drip) 2. I maintain my flower beds by walking my garden once a week and pulling up grass shoots or weeds that pop up. This prevents it from getting out of control. 3. I deadhead some flowers. Sometimes I don’t. I do what I feel like and what there’s time for. 4. I trim overgrowth in the fall, one time. 5. I throw some fertilizer on my plants once in the fall and once in the spring. Sometimes I forget, and guess what… they’re still fine. *I’m in Zone 7b, Fort Mill, South Carolina, 6-8 hours of full sun back here Don’t overthink it. The hardest part is planting everything. The maintenance is the easy part! So start thinking about what you want for your yard and once fall rolls around, get to planting! �. Then next summer, you can sit back and enjoy it! One of things I had to learn, for my garden in my backyard in Virginia zone 7b, is that it is still necessary to provide moisture to my soil during the fall and winter months. We don’t get much more additional precipitation durning these months than any other month of the year. It doesn’t snow much here either. Over the past three years I’ve had to learn the difference between cold soil and moisture soil. It used to trick me and there was definitely a learning curve lol. I’ve gotten much better! • This year I did get smart after watching @brokefarmer76 and grabbed a sprinkler. Having this more automated way to water does make me quite happy since…you know…I’m not a fan of the cold. Comment “GARDEN” and you’ll receive an auto DM with a link to every single product we used! ⭐️ make sure you are following me so the DM goes through and doesn’t get stuck in your message requests folder 🥰 This is how we built our French inspired kitchen garden :) there was so much work that went into even just prepping our space before we built the actual raised beds so I didn’t want to skip this part! Our yard is incredibly tricky, you can even see in the video of our house how we have a retaining wall even for our actual house. Our slope of our yard is intense, literally an 18’ drop from the front of our house to the back of the house and that doesn’t even include the yard. We decided to build our garden beds matching the natural slope so water would drain appropriately and so it wouldn’t look odd next to our fence which was installed matching our natural slope as well. We love it so much and this will be our 3rd gardening season growing in it! I love how sturdy the beds are, I love being able to sit on the edge and I can even stand on them when I need to reach the tomatoes really high up! Two years ago I planted 10 Pastel Elegance plants and I’ve been waiting for the day when I could harvest from them. You’re technically supposed to wait until year 3 before cutting, but I couldn’t resist ;) I did buy these as 5-7 roots so they are already quite large plants and I only cut 5-6 inch stems on these. Next year these plants should be huge! This design is incredibly easy to build and it can scaled up or down to fit any size or application. Credit to Mitch @pnwnodig and his “DIY pea trellis” reel for the inspiration behind my design. What went wrong? We think it was about timing in this case. This has happened several times, when I just got busy and planted late. Last year, we planted the last three beds of carrots too late, and then we harvested too late this spring. Here in zone 7b, it’s tricky to get carrot seeds to germinate in the heat of August, but I think that’s the best time to plant for a late fall/winter harvest. Wait too long, and unpredictable weather combined with shorter days might not give the carrots enough time for growth before winter. If they had enough time, they may have been in good shape by late winter/spring and we could have had a better harvest like the one we planted in August. When do you sow carrot seeds in your growing zone?
