Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another due to a change in its speed. This phenomenon occurs because light travels at different speeds in different materials. For example, light moves faster in air than in water or glass. When a light ray enters a denser medium at an angle, its speed decreases, causing the ray to bend toward the normal (an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface of the medium). Conversely, when light exits a denser medium into a less dense one, it speeds up and bends away from the normal. The degree of bending depends on the refractive indices of the two media, which is a measure of how much a material can slow down light. The fundamental law governing refraction is Snell's Law, which states that the ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence (the angle at which light strikes the surface) to the sine of the angle of refraction (the angle at which light travels within the new medium) is constant and equal to the ratio of the refractive indices of the two media. Mathematically, this is expressed as: n₁ sin(θ₁) = n₂ sin(θ₂) where n₁ and n₂ are the refractive indices of the initial and final media, and θ₁ and θ₂ are the angles of incidence and refraction, respectively. This equation helps predict the path of light as it transitions between materials. Refraction is responsible for many optical phenomena in nature and technology. One common example is the apparent bending of a straw in a glass of water. This happens because light from the submerged portion of the straw is refracted as it exits the water, making the straw appear broken or shifted. Another striking example is the formation of rainbows. Sunlight entering raindrops undergoes refraction, dispersion, and reflection, splitting into its constituent colors to create the spectrum of a rainbow.
