🥑 🍌 Starting solids can be confusing for a lot of parents! Baby-led weaning? Purées? How do you start? When is it time to move to the next texture? This is the timeline I followed with my baby, as a pediatric feeding therapist. We took a combination approach of mashed foods with hard munchables (check out my blog, link in bio!) and started introducing soft smashable sticks of food after about 1 month of mashed foods. We focused on self-feeding with responsive co-feeding (this means responding to your babies cues as you are helping them with feeding - are they opening their mouth? Are they leaning forward? Are they communicating they want more? Are they turning away? Blocking their mouth? Becoming upset?). ✨Remember, each baby follows their own timeline, and what’s right one baby/family isn’t always what’s right for another. In general, it’s recommended to start solids around 6 months of age, and they should be chewing at least some foods (meltable solids, soft solids) by 10 months of age (reflexes that help babies learn to eat chewable foods typically disappear around this time). Babies should be transitioned to soft table foods around 12 months in order to begin receiving the majority of their calories from solid foods versus breast milk or formula. ⭐️ Check out my previous reels and blogs (link in bio) to learn about the readiness signs for starting solids, and activities you can do with your 3-6 month old to get them ready to start solids! Starting solids can be overwhelming, especially as a first-time parent! 🩷 We had our own struggles when my daughter hated food at first & developed a negative association with mealtime. We had to start completely from scratch with food play before she was ready to actually eat. In this video, my daughter is 11.5 months old. This is after a TON of practice, patience, and lots of exposure! When we first started, I never thought she would like food, but here we are! 😊 Here are my tips for starting solids with your baby: 1️⃣ Build trust — Don’t force or sneak food. This can cause baby to resist trying new foods or even avoid mealtime because they lose trust in something new and scary. 2️⃣ Eat together as a family — Seeing you eat motivates baby & builds trust. Try to sit close & eat with them instead of standing over them and starting at them, it can be intimidating otherwise. 3️⃣ Eat off baby’s plate — This shows your baby the food is safe and delicious! 4️⃣ Let baby eat from your plate — Their curiosity can encourage them to try new foods. 5️⃣ Make mealtimes positive and fun — If your baby is nervous, start with food play on a tray with no pressure to eat. Model taking bites and playing with food. We did this a lot! 6️⃣ Don’t stress about the approach — Whether it’s purees, baby-led weaning, or a mix, do what feels right for your family. 7️⃣ Remember this is all new — It can be a slow start! My daughter didn’t really start enjoying food until around 8-9 months. Every baby moves at their own pace, so be patient and kind to yourself and your little one. 🩷 If you’re starting solids or struggling, drop your questions in the comments—I’m here to help! 👇🫶🏼 Comment “LINK” for all our starting solids essentials! 💖 We’re loving our new @thebusybabycups #StartingSolids #BabyLedWeaning #FirstFoods #SolidFoodsJourney #BabyEating #Introducingsolids #BLW

It helps you start solids from that first taste and beyond!! 🍽 Baby’s Starting Solids Timeline Wondering when and what to feed your baby as they grow? Here’s a quick peek: 👶 6 months: purees or hand held soft solids 1x a day. Focus on iron-rich options first! 👶 7–8 months: Introduce more textures if you haven’t already. Mashed purées, soft finger foods.. 👶 9–10 months: More self-feeding with soft pieces; start offering 3 meals a day. 👶 10–12 months: Chopped family foods, practicing utensils, and continuing variety. ✨ Every baby is different, watch their cues, not just the calendar. 💬 I’d love to know, where is your little one on the timeline? #startingsolids #eattalkgrowfeeding #BLW #Purees

🥑 Comment “SOLIDS” and I’ll send you a link our most comprehensive resources for baby’s first bites: The Starting Solids Handbook & Baby’s First 100 Foods! 👋 Hi, I’m Jordyn: Speech-Language Pathologist, Feeding Specialist, and Mom of two. My team and I aim to educate parents on how to support their baby & toddler’s speech, feeding, and motor development at home! Here is a great visual of why most 4-month-olds are not ready for solids (yes, solids also means purées!) Why? Their motor skills are just not where they should be for eating- and that’s okay! Because we don’t expect 4-month-olds to be ready to eat foods! ➡️A baby who is not stable in the high chair is much less likely to have a good time at meals. ➡️Sitting up independently (6-7 month milestone) and great head control are extremely important for swallowing safety and choking prevention. ➡️A baby who isn’t reaching out and bringing items to mouth (6 month milestone) is not likely to self-feed. Self-feeding is important for swallowing safety and for participation in meals! ❌Many parents are so focused on starting solids the day their little one turns X months old or the second their pediatrician gives a green light. But let’s think again. ✅Instead keep ~6 months in mind for a starting age and make sure baby has all the skills on the First Bites Checklist before offering foods! ➡️We break this down and more in our Starting Solids Resources! 🥑Written with input from several Feeding Specialists, an Occupational Therapist, a Lactation Consultant, and a Registered Dietitian, our resources give you the confidence you need to start solids, and actually enjoy mealtimes! ➡️ Comment “SOLIDS” to check them out!

Does your baby’s timeline look similar? There may be some variation to this timeline, but the main goal is to gradually increase your baby’s solid food intake as they get older, working towards solid foods being their main source of nutrition at 12 months old. Some babies may move a little faster than this and some a little slower & that’s okay 🫶🏼. It’s easy to feel pressure to offer 3 meals a day right out of the gate at 6 months but that’s not necessary. Follow their lead by gradually increasing their solid food meals/snacks as your baby becomes more comfortable and efficient.
