It’s the triggerfish 😅 Story time: I was snorkeling in Okinawa at a beautiful dive site when, about five minutes in, I felt a nibble on my left leg. At first, I thought I’d bumped into something, so I kept swimming and filming a school of fish until this happened. I’ve encountered many triggerfish in the past, but never an angry one like this. 🐟 Triggerfish are super territorial during nesting season and will charge at anyone who gets too close. Most are pretty chill… until you meet an angry one. Triggerfish may look colourful, but during breeding season they’re some of the most aggressive fish on the reef. This one charged me multiple times, defending its eggs like a true underwater gladiator. ⚠️ Fun fact: Triggerfish protect their nests in a cone-shaped territory that extends upward — so swimming up won’t help. The trick? Move away horizontally. Even though this happened in Mauritius, divers on the Great Barrier Reef know how intense these reef bosses can be. Titan triggerfish swimming straight at the camera is always a proper moment underwater. Here are some fun facts about the Titan Triggerfish: The Titan Triggerfish is the largest triggerfish species in the world. They can grow up to around 75 cm (30 inches), which makes them seriously imposing on the reef. They are reef engineers. Using powerful jaws, they flip rocks, break up coral rubble and dig big craters in the sand hunting for crabs, sea urchins and mollusks. When you see disturbed sand patches, there’s a good chance a titan has been feeding there. They are famous for being highly territorial, especially during nesting season. If you get too close to their nest, they will charge. And it’s not just sideways territory — they guard a cone-shaped area above the nest, so swimming straight up can actually make it worse. The best move is to calmly swim away horizontally. They have a locking dorsal spine, the “trigger,” which they use to wedge themselves into rocks so predators can’t pull them out. Once locked in, they’re incredibly hard to shift. They’re also smarter than people think. Titans quickly learn what divers are and often approach out of curiosity — although sometimes that approach is a warning to back off. If one swam toward you, it could have been curious… or just reminding you whose reef it is. Either way, that’s always a solid underwater encounter. This territorial little (or maybe not so little) bugger is responsible for more attacks on divers than probably anything else I can think of. Yes, they actually break skin and masks. Even the so called “apex predator” sharks are scared of them. So if you’re in the “cone of death” which radiates upwards from where the triggerfish keep their nests, you better get out right away . . .
