Does the Shroud of Turin, which people believe once cloaked the body of Jesus, really have links to India? The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth that measures about 14 feet long and 3.5 feet wide. Currently housed in Turin, Italy, it first appeared in historical records in France in 1354. The Shroud has fascinated people for generations due to a faint outline of a man on the cloth. But now, a new DNA analysis finds that the Shroud of Turin may have direct ties to the Indus Valley Civilization. The study found that about 40% of the human DNA on a 1978 sample of the Shroud is of Indian origin, raising the possibility that the linen threads used to make it may have originated in India. “Analysis of the DNA traces found on the Shroud of Turin suggests the… possibility that the yarn was produced in India,” Gianni Barcaccia and other study authors wrote. The research, published in bioRxiv, has yet to be peer-reviewed, The Independent noted. That doesn’t mean the relic itself is “Indian.” Instead, scientists suggest the DNA reflects the shroud’s journey, shaped by trade, migration, and centuries of human contact. The Romans, for instance, are known to have imported textiles from India, which could explain how Indian fibers ended up in the artifact. Other researchers unaffiliated with the study were quick to voice their doubts. “I still see no reason to doubt that the shroud is French and dates to the 13th or 14th century,” Anders Götherström of Stockholm University said. The analysis also underscores just how many hands touched the shroud. Researchers found countless other genetic traces, including those from pigs, cows, bananas, carrots, peppers, and multiple human populations. “The reconstructed microbiome of the Shroud reveals a rich tapestry of multiple microbes commonly found on the human epidermis,” the researchers wrote.
