How They Rebuild Torn ACLs @theaclrehabguy 👈FOLLOW It all sounded so easy right? That first day in the surgeons office “So we’ll whip out a piece of your hamstring, pop it in your knee as a new ACL, you’ll do some physio and you’ll be back to sport in 6-9 months!” Simples right? Maybe not.. The biggest lie people are told after ACL surgery is not one specific thing.. But it often starts in this initial conversation The reality is only 24% of amateur athletes get back to sport within 12 months Many are sent back with a high risk of re-tear due to low quality rehab, missing out on critical things like passing strength and jump testing, plyometrics and a clear return to sport plan. Reality does not often match these initial expectations The reality is that rehab is hard, people are rarely given a clear roadmap of exactly what they should do, how to navigate the setbacks and how to reduce the risk of further injury! So if you thought initially, “I’ll be back skiing or playing sport in 9 months” when you first had surgery” but reality has looked much different I’ve just created a training that might help It’s called “How to build the strongest legs of your life after ACL surgery” and guess what? Obviously, I am PRO ACL REHAB and believe great rehab can address the common reasons patients want/need to wear a brace when they return to sport. Common reasons patients wear a brace: 1. Knee still feels weak and unstable 2. Retuning too soon 3. Multiple ACL tears 4. Graft protection I believe if you had a good rehab where you didn’t skip steps, all decisions were based off of objective criteria, and you gradually worked yourself back into your sport then the brace is not necessary.

3 Things I Wish I Did Earlier in ACL Rehab 👇 1️⃣ Wake up my quads sooner Early quad activation isn’t optional—it’s essential. I delayed, and it slowed everything: my gait, my control, my confidence. If your quad isn’t firing, your knee isn’t healing right. 2️⃣ Improve my tibial rotation I focused so much on flexion and extension, I ignored the subtle joint mechanics that matter. Lack of tibial rotation = stiffness, poor tracking, and limited movement freedom. 3️⃣ Test every 6–8 weeks I waited too long to assess. Regular testing gives you feedback, keeps you focused, and shows if your work is actually working. What you don’t track, you can’t fix. Don’t make the same mistakes.
