Whichever one you choose, be sure to research their passing rates. If your already have a masters in psychology or special education, you may qualify for the BACB certification program which is about 8 or 9 courses opposed to getting a second masters degree. Whether you’re starting fresh or leveling up, the journey begins here! Step 2️⃣: Supervision Shuffle 🕵️‍♂️ 2000 hours of supervision might sound like a lot, but with the right mentors and dedication, it could be the best part of your journey. A lot of people get stuck at this step. Either they can’t find a supervisor, or their current supervisor isn’t meeting the requirements of both restricted and unrestricted hours. If this is you, you need to have a serious conversion with your supervisor about your goals. Step 3️⃣: Study Hustle 📚🤯 Grab your study materials and dive into the ABA universe! 🌌 Study, practice, take mock examples, invest in study materials that meet your budget and get ready to shine. Aim for at least 6 months of studying (EVERYDAY) to feel like as ready as possible 🤓💪🏾 Step 4️⃣: Exam Elation 📝🎉 Once you’ve checked all the boxes, it’s time to apply and sit for the BCBA exam. 📋✅ Nervous? I don’t think anyone walkes into that testing center without butterflies in their stomach. But you will be prepared and you’ve got this! Pass that exam and get ready to rock your BCBA status! 🥳🌟 Step 5️⃣: Celebrate! Or study & retake. So about 46% of test takes don’t pass on the first try. That’s okay. Once you become a BCBA, it’s not like they ask how many time did it take you to pass on your job application. So don’t be discouraged by any of these steps & remeber it’s not a race. I’ve had many different jobs since I started in the field of ABA 13 years ago, but honestly - what I’m doing now feels the most like “me.” ✅ I get to help people in a hands-on way. ✅ I’m never bored. ✅ I get to set my own schedule & have full clinical control. ✅ There’s no stupid insurance company telling me how to do my job or how often I can do it. ✅ I get great work-life balance. ✅ I can choose to focus on different side jobs and pull back on others as my interests & availability changes. The BCBA first-time exam pass rate just hit an all-time low of 51%. That’s the lowest it’s been since the BACB started publishing this data. And the trend has been moving in one direction since 2020. For the data, I pulled pass rate data going back to 2013. Since the BACB only publishes historical pass rates from 2020 onward, I retrieved pre-2020 rates from Dubuque & Kazemi (2021), who compiled first-time pass rates from 2013 to 2020. Here’s what it looks like across three Task List eras. 3rd Edition (2013-2014): 59-60%. Smaller candidate pool, relatively stable. 4th Edition (2015-2020): Jumped to 66-67% and held there for years. The 4th Edition was a remarkably stable period for pass rates despite the candidate pool nearly tripling. 5th Edition (2021-2025): Steady decline. 60%, 55%, 56%, 54%, 51%. That’s a 15-point drop in five years. A few things are happening at the same time. First-time candidate volume grew 51% from 2020 to 2025 (6,583 to 9,955). But actual first-time passers only grew 17%. More people are sitting for the exam. Fewer are passing. The retake pool has more than doubled. In 2020 there were 6,166 retake candidates. In 2025 there were 13,196. Retake candidates now outnumber first-time candidates for the first time. And their pass rate has dropped from 31% to 23%. This creates a compounding problem. Every year, a large cohort of failed candidates rolls into the retake pool. Most of them fail again. The pool gets bigger and less likely to convert. Whether this is driven by exam difficulty, candidate preparation quality, the demographics of who’s entering the pipeline, or some combination is an open question. The data just shows the trend. What’s clear is that the BCBA certification pipeline is becoming less efficient at exactly the moment the field needs it to scale. There are an estimated 103,000 annual BCBA job listings, but only roughly 75,000 active BCBAs. The supply side math is getting harder every year. Basically I am a school based BCBA who is compassionate and trauma informed, I love my greens, and prioritize keeping my learners happy relaxed and engaged. I like to problem solve as a team and show flexibility in my plans. I focus on reinforcing the adult behaviors as they implement plans and model for them as much as possible. I always try to get to the root of the problem while prioritizing safety for everyone. NOT I am not clipboard and data obsessed, I don’t focus on compliance and robotic responses or implementation, I don’t believe my learners should do things just because I said so and my plans are not a one size fits all type of plan. I don’t believe in yelling at learners, and I won’t make you figure it out on your own.
