Focus on keeping your shoulders protracted & driving your arms “towards the wall” rather than straight back - this will help with limiting upper back engagement. Want wider shoulders? Here’s 3 exercises that will challenge your side delts in different ways. First is a dumbbell lateral raise but made harder. Use a lighter weight and pause for a second at the top position since this is where the exercise is the most challenging. Next, we want to use an exercise that is now hardest at the bottom position instead of the top. Cables accomplish this, but for even more shoulder activation, research suggests to lean over at a slight angle as you raise. Last, we’ll do upright rows but the better kind that doesn’t harm your shoulder. Use a wider grip on a bar and raise it up so that your elbows make a 90 degree angle at the top position.
