ADAre you interested in implementing phenomenon based units into your teaching but would be better off with a pre-written curriculum that did all the planning for you? Phenomenon based units are hard to plan because the phenomenon has to be both novel and rich in potential content to discover through investigations. OpenSciEd is a free-to-use curriculum that has been designed and developed by experts and teachers. It uses brain-based learning strategies and is NGSS aligned. The curriculum framework however is BIG and can be intimidating to comb through. I am currently teaching their 8th grade science units, and I’d love to share what my team has discovered about the curriculum. I can tell you about what we love and what we hate and share how we make it fit our classrooms. 🤗Use open source curriculum such as OpenSciEd, New Visions, and All Species Education Consulting (Illinois Storylines).
👉 These are FREE! curricula accessible to teachers online.
👉 Storylines can be supplemented with suggested labs throughout.
👉 Join Facebook groups with other teachers using the same curriculum
🤓 Attend training for creating your own NGSS aligned storylines.
👉 You know your students best and can use phenomena and design investigations that they will connect with.
👉 Truth - this will take work upfront, but it’s so worth it to see your ideas come to life as students make connections!

💻 Purchae phenomena-driven curriculum that is ACTUALLY aligned with NGSS. All curricula available is NOT created equal. Here are some things to look for.
👉 Units begin with anchoring phenomena.
👉 Assessments are 3D and include transfer tasks.
👉 Includes training for teachers.
👉 Teacher support is available and ongoing while using the curriculum.

🔬Instead of spending money on new textbooks, purchase lab equipment that can be used again and again.
👉 Microscopes that connect to students’ Chromebooks or iPads are an awesome choice!
