AD“The individual bumble bees were allowed to climb onto forceps to minimize handling stress. Individuals that did not climb onto forceps were gently grasped by the side of the thorax or legs with forceps during transfer. Colonies were allowed to acclimatize to the new nest box for at least 2 days from transfer before starting the experiment.”
The bumble bees were also provided with a sucrose solution and pollen. The laboratory was illuminated in a way that allowed for a natural circadian rhythm.

THDid you guess the animal right? I thought this was a bumblebee, but I was wrong. Bumblebees have fuzzy abdomens. STThe idea that "bumblebees shouldn't be able to fly" is one of science’s most charming—and persistent—urban legends. It stems from a 1930s calculation where a biologist and a physicist applied the fixed-wing aerodynamics of airplanes to the bee’s fuzzy, robust body. On paper, their wings seemed too small to generate the lift required to get such a heavy chassis off the ground. However, the bumblebee didn't wait for peer review; it simply flew anyway because it doesn't fly like a 747. Instead of steady airflows, bees use a "reverse-pitch" semirotary motion, flapping their wings back and forth roughly 230 times per second to create tiny, powerful hurricanes (leading-edge vortices) that suck them upward.

🚁 Have you ever heard, “According to physics, bumblebees shouldn’t be able to fly”? This false statement assumes bumblebees fly without moving their wings, like a plane. Bumblebees, however, fly more like a helicopter by rotating their wings in a figure-of-eight.
👴 Older bumblebees can have uneven wing edges – natural signs of everyday wear and tear.
⏳ A bumblebee is only ever 40 minutes away from starvation. This is the longest they can fly for without drinking nectar.
