GIThat rumor is going around again—that a male bumblebee resting on a flower is dying. But that’s most likely not true!
Male bumblebees are kicked out of the nest once they mature. From then on, they live entirely outdoors—sleeping on flowers, leaves, or wherever they find shelter.
It’s common to see them motionless early in the morning or during cooler weather, just warming up or resting.
So if you spot one curled up on a bloom, don’t panic—he’s likely just taking a nap, not at the end of his life.

BLWhen I was little I was taught to give a little sugar water to bumblebees who look tired. The unseasonably warm weather we’ve had in my neck of the woods is waking up all sorts (bees, turtles, ramps) before they necessarily have everything they need to be successful. These are the wee ones who get hit with the effects of global warming first, the canaries in the coal mine. So keep an eye out in the coming weeks for a being that could use a drink, or a little leaf litter mulch to hide from frost under. I know it doesn’t change things on a global scale (stares at multibillion dollar corporations and their emissions), but I know it mattered for the lil bee, if only for a few minutes 💖 just trying to be the best neighbor I can be

BEBumblebee Body Language 101! 🐝
This little one isn’t just waving, she’s in defensive mode! Before resorting to stinging, a bumblebee will often raise its legs in the air as a warning sign. Unlike most bees, wasps, and hornets that sting at the first sign of a threat, bumblebees are a little more laid-back and prefer to give a heads-up first.
💡 Fun fact: This move is called the Disturbance Leg-Lift Response (DLR). If you see a bumblebee doing this, or vibrating her wings, it’s best to back away, stinging is their last resort, but they’ve even been known to bite first!

RIThis sleeping bumble bee is probably the cutest thing we’ve ever seen 🥺🐝
After a good day spent foraging in our polytunnels, she fell asleep in one of the cucumber flowers. Our team found her in the morning, she sleepily crawled out onto a petal and promptly went back to sleep. It was 5.30 in the morning, so we can’t blame her. Hopefully she had a good night’s rest before her next busy day!
As we grow organically, our polytunnels are often buzzing with bees and other insects. And her sleep was safe - no harmful pesticides to be found.
Apparently it’s #dontsteponabeeday today too. A sentiment we can certainly get on board with! These precious pollinators need all the protection they can get, and if our polytunnels offer safe sanctuary, we’re delighted.
