Class is back in session 💌🤓📚 I’ve had many DMs recently asking for more videos to help improve our writing and English skills. As a teacher, I tend to notice where many people could use some extra help. Punctuation is SO important and I think a review could be useful! Obviously, these “rules” have exceptions. However, in academic and professional writing, I truly believe that mastering the basics before experimentation is effective. In this quick video I talk about: Semicolons (;) A very useful tool. They connect closely related independent clauses when a period would feel too final and a comma would be incorrect. Em dashes (—) create emphasis or interruption, setting off extra information in a way that feels more dramatic or conversational than commas or parentheses. Commas (,) separate ideas within a sentence, but they can’t join two independent clauses on their own—doing so creates a comma splice. We all have great ideas. Let’s work on communicating these as effectively as possible⭐️🤍 #books #writing #englishclass #reading #writingclass

What is a complex sentence? A sentence with: 1. Main clause (makes full sense) 2. Dependent clause (needs more info) Example: “I will release you when we find Penny.” • Main clause: I will release you • Dependent clause: when we find Penny Together, they form a complex sentence! More examples: • Call me when you’re home. • When the movie ends, we’ll go eat. • I cried when I saw the ending. Quick Tip: Use present tense after “when”, even if the main sentence is in future. 📝 Quick Grammar Guide: Sentences Made Easy! What is a Sentence? A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought. It has: - Subject (who/what the sentence is about). - Verb (action or state). Types of Sentences (by Structure): 1. Simple Sentence: - One complete thought (1 subject + 1 verb). - Example: "She sings." 2. Compound Sentence: - Two complete thoughts joined by FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). - Example: "She sings, and he dances." 3. Complex Sentence: - One complete thought + one incomplete thought (dependent clause). - Example: "She sings because she loves music." 💡 Remember: - Simple = 1 thought. - Compound = 2 thoughts + FANBOYS. - Complex = 1 thought + 1 "extra" (if/when/because). -Answers Explained (Why Right vs. Wrong):* 1. "I have two dogs." - ✅ Simple: Just one complete thought. - ❌ Not compound (no FANBOYS) or complex (no dependent clause). 2. "If you save money, you can buy a bike." - ✅ Complex: "If you save money" (incomplete thought) + "you can buy a bike" (complete). - ❌ Not simple (has two parts) or compound (no FANBOYS). 3. "Birds fly south in winter." - ✅ Simple: One complete thought. - ❌ No extra clauses for compound/complex. 4. "I forgot my phone, so I missed your messages." - ✅ Compound: Two complete thoughts joined by "so." - ❌ Not simple (two thoughts) or complex (no dependent clause). 5. "I jog before school." - ✅ Simple: One complete thought. - ❌ "Before school" is a phrase, not a clause. 6. "It rained, so I couldn’t mow the lawn." - ✅ Compound: Two thoughts + "so." - ❌ Not complex (no dependent clause). 7. "I helped because I had free time." - ✅ Complex: "Because I had free time" depends on the main clause. - ❌ Not simple (two parts) or compound (no FANBOYS). 8. "If you’re sick, stay home." - ✅ Complex: "If you’re sick" is a dependent clause. 9. "I learned knitting online." - ✅ Simple: One complete thought. Most teachers stop at the book. But in my classroom? That’s just the beginning. Here’s why: our students—especially our language learners—deserve more than just a read-aloud. They need visuals. Structure. A chance to own the knowledge. That’s where the Pictorial Input Chart comes in. After reading, we pull the Big Ideas straight out of the Teacher-Made Big Book—then plug those facts into our Pictorial Input Chart. We cite the source (yes, just like a real researcher!) and build out meaning together. This isn’t fluff—it’s Strategic Shared Reading at its best:    •   Academic Vocabulary    •   Complex Sentence Structure    •   Purposeful Visuals    •   Repetition with Meaning If you’re ready to:    •   Turn your read-alouds into intentional instruction    •   Support ELLs with language scaffolds that stick    •   Build confident readers and writers using content-rich texts YOU create… Then you’re going to LOVE what’s inside my new guide. Drop “BIG BOOK” in the comments or DM me and I’ll send it your way. Let’s make your shared reading ✨transformational✨ this week. #StrategicSharedReading #TeacherMadeBigBook #SharedReadingStrategy #LanguageLearners #ScaffoldedInstruction #AnchorChartsThatWork #ProjectGLAD #ElementaryELA #TeacherAuthor #DifferentiatedInstruction #BigBookStrategy #ELStrategies #VisualLearning #ReadingComprehensionTools #IntentionalTeaching
