AD | Join me at the @worldmuseum_ in Liverpool to find out about the Amoxtli Tezcatlipoca, one of the world’s few surviving pre-colonial Mesoamerican manuscripts. Codices were integral to precolonial Meso-American societies such as the Nahuatl, Mayans and Aztecs, as they were used for making decisions and helping to understand the future. They offer a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of the civilisations that coexisted alongside the Aztec empire during the reign of Emperor Moctezuma and the arrival of the Spanish in 1519 - which you can discover more about in the new series of @bbcarts Civilisations: Rise and Fall. The Codex is also known as the Codex Fejérváry-Mayer, named after Hungarian collector Gabriel Fejéváry, and Liverpool goldsmith and antiquarian Joseph Mayer, who had previously owned the codex. Amoxtli Tezcatlipoca means ‘The Book of the Smoking Mirror’ and reading it is like stepping into the pre-colonial worldviews of the Nahuatl, Mayan and Aztec civilisations. This isn’t just a book, it’s an ancient Mesoamerican time machine, and it’s been through a lot to still be here.
